Hope and Healing

“Visiting a patient’s bedside can make a tremendous difference. Hope is powerful medicine.”

Gary Lamb, CanCare volunteer

Gary Lamb, lymphoma survivor since 1999, and Eric LaBrant, bladder cancer survivor since 2000, are part of the CanCare hospital visitation program at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital.

For many cancer patients, receiving treatment while in the hospital can be one of the most isolating and fearful times during their cancer experience.

For that reason, CanCare provides additional training for CanCare volunteers who visit cancer patients and their families at Houston area hospitals. During the visits, CanCare volunteers introduce themselves as cancer survivors, inform patients and family members about CanCare’s unique services and most importantly, listen to their thoughts and concerns.

CanCare volunteers recognize the unique needs of hospitalized patients, and are trained to help meet those needs. These caring, sensitive men and women see beyond the confines of a hospital room: they help newly diagnosed cancer patients and family members face the future with courage, strength and Hope.
