Ginger's Story

My name is Ginger. With the close loving support of family, friends, and medical team, I have endured countless scans, blood tests, biopsies, port placement, 35 infusions, a partial mastectomy, and 38 radiation treatments. I am now in treatment maintenance mode with infusions and medication. Somewhere along the way, I felt like the treatments had taken away the very core of my existence. I needed to connect with someone who had travelled this road.

I was skeptical at first, but decided to submit the mentor request form. I was surprised with the prompt response especially since my request included that I wanted to text not talk.

Anthony is dedicated and persistent and promptly set about connecting me with someone. He brought Shirley into my life. From the beginning, Shirley was a great connection for me. Having her text with “How are you today?” was so heartfelt. I can really answer the question and not have to pretend that I am good even if I am not.

hrough the months, Shirley has also gently coaxed me into having phone conversations with her. I am still trying to figure out how she managed to get me over my talking on the phone phobia. CanCare provides me with a resource that I need. There are not enough adjectives to describe the professional dedication of this organization’s staff and volunteers. I am blessed to be a part of this.
