March News from CanCare

Dear CanCare Family,

As the warmth of spring draws near, we are filled with a profound sense of hope and renewal. Just as nature emerges from its winter slumber, so too do we have the opportunity to embrace this season with fresh perspective and boundless optimism.

Spring is a time of growth, of new beginnings, and of limitless potential. It's a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always the promise of brighter days ahead.

Let's carry this spirit of hope into everything we do at CanCare. Let's continue to support and uplift one another, to reach out with compassion to those in need, and to sow the seeds of positivity wherever we go.

Together, let's make this season a beacon of hope for all who cross our path.

Warmest wishes,

Darcie Champagne Wells

President and CEO, CanCare Caregiver Volunteer

The Season of Hope

After the dark gray days of winter, comes spring.  Filled with color and scent, light and bright, HOPE.

What is it that you are hoping for right now in your life?

Even though what we hope for may change based on where we are in our lives -waiting, treatment, recovery, caregiving - may you always have a sense of something to wish for, to move toward, to desire for yourself and/or for the people you love.

Our survivors (and that includes caregivers) by your side are living symbols of hope – our CanCare volunteers have lived through the cancer journey and they know that there is life with cancer, during cancer and beyond cancer. Sometimes in the midst of a cancer journey it can be hard to feel hopeful or encouraged. You are not alone. Together we can find hope and encourage one another no matter what lies ahead.

Volunteer Highlight

Meet Carol Greene, a compassionate and dedicated cancer survivor and CanCare Volunteer who was recently recognized as CanCare's
2023 Volunteer of the Year.

Originally hailing from Western Canada, Carol made the life-changing move to Texas in 1972. With a heart full of empathy and a desire to make a difference, she dedicated 29 years of her life as a registered nurse within the Memorial Hermann system.

It was during her tenure there in the mid-90s that Carol was introduced to CanCare, an organization close to her heart. Over the years, she became deeply involved, serving as a church representative for the past decade. Outside of her volunteer work, Carol finds joy in family gatherings, cooking, gardening, and embroidery and spending time with her grandchildren and now great grandbabies.

One of the highlights of Carol's week is her participation in the Prayer and Praise Team weekly gathering, where she finds solace and strength in the power of prayer alongside friends from all over the country. Representing CanCare at Health Fairs allows Carol to give back to the community and spread awareness of the organization's invaluable services.

As a mentor, Carol shares her experiences and offers support to new volunteers, helping to ease their anxieties and guide them on their journey with CanCare. At Houston Methodist West Hospital, Carol serves as a volunteer alongside four other dedicated CanCare volunteers, providing support to cancer patients in their time of need.

Despite facing personal losses, including the passing of her father and son to cancer, Carol reflects on the importance of cherishing each day and living her "new normal" to the fullest. Her resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to serving others make her a beacon of hope and inspiration within the CanCare community.

Thank you, Carol, for your incredible service to the CanCare community!
