April 2026 News from CanCare

Dear CanCare Family,

CanCare is celebrating 36 years  of providing hope and support to those facing cancer!  Since 1990, our mission has remained the same—to ensure no one faces  cancer alone.

In our 35 years, we have trained 2,500 volunteers,  provided one-on-one support to more than 55,000 individuals,  and made more than 240,000 hospital  visits. These milestones have been made possible because of you—our  donors, clients, and volunteers.

Through your support over the past 35 years, more than 1 million  lives have been touched by CanCare's mission, including  one-on-one support, hospital visitation, and community education.

As we celebrate this journey, we look forward to continuing to  make an impact together. Thank you for being part of our CanCare family!

With sincere gratitude,

Darcie Champagne Wells

President and CEO, CanCare Caregiver Volunteer

Pete’s Story: Embracing Each Moment

"As a survivor, every moment feels like agift, especially the moments I don’t expect: like laughter with a grandchild, awalk with my wife, or a simple cup of coffee on a quiet morning."

A seizure at the end of a yoga class in 2005 set off years of  unanswered questions—until 2010, when a growing brain mass revealed a  diagnosis no one is ready for: stage 3  oligodendroglioma. Surgery, radiation, and two years of  chemotherapy brought some of the toughest days of his life.

What changed everything was support. His wife was his constant strength, but she  also encouraged him to connect with someone who truly understood. That’s when  he was matched with Don, a CanCare  survivor volunteer—someone who had walked the same road. Don  offered reassurance, real conversations, and the kind of understanding only  another survivor can give.

Through that connection, he discovered that vulnerability is courage, that he  didn’t have to face fear alone, and that hope can grow even in the hardest  moments.

Today, every birthday, every clear scan, every ordinary day  feels like a victory. And he credits CanCare’s  survivor-to-survivor support for helping him find strength,  peace, and hope—one day at a time.

For  a deeper look at Pete's journey of finding hope through connection,  we invite you to read his full story in Hope in the  Face of Cancer.

New Podcast Episodes: Stories of  Strength, Healing, and the Power of Listening to Your Body

This month, CanCare highlights two  powerful conversations about resilience  and self-advocacy. Oncology  nutritionist Patrice Surley shares  how small, intentional nutrition and lifestyle  changes can support the body during cancer care, offering  simple, sustainable ways to strengthen your health.

In another episode, Jackie Garcia recounts her five-year fight to be heard before  finally receiving a diagnosis—a 20-pound tumor  at age 31. Her story underscores the importance of trusting your instincts and the healing power of community.

Both episodes offer encouragement,  perspective, and practical insight for anyone  navigating cancer.
