Summer News from CanCare

Dear CanCare Family,

As we celebrate National Cancer Survivorship Month, we want to thank you — our donors, clients, and volunteers — for being the heart of CanCare. Your continued support allows us to walk alongside those facing cancer with compassion, hope, and understanding.

This month is a powerful reminder that survivorship is about more than just treatment — it's about resilience, renewal, and the strength found in community. At CanCare, we honor every person who has faced a cancer diagnosis and continues to move forward with courage. Survivorship looks different for everyone, and we are proud to be part of each unique journey, offering encouragement and connection every step of the way.

Our recent luncheon was a special moment of reflection and celebration. Thanks to your generosity, we honored survivors, celebrated our mission, and came together as a community dedicated to hope and healing.

We are especially grateful to Memorial Hermann, our Presenting Sponsor for National Cancer Survivorship Month, for their generous support and commitment to championing survivorship in our community.

Thank you for the countless ways you support CanCare and the lives we touch. Together, we are a lifeline for those navigating cancer — during Survivorship Month and every day of the year.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Darcie Champagne Wells

Kim’s Story: Learning to Listen

"I learned the most valuable lesson any caregiver can receive: how to truly listen."

Years before her father’s prostate cancer diagnosis, Kim Trimble was unknowingly preparing to be a caregiver. While managing a bank branch across the street from CanCare, she walked in one day looking for a way to help. That small step led to a deep connection with the organization—and a journey that would later become very personal.

Kim went through CanCare’s volunteer training, not initially to volunteer, but to better support those facing cancer. That training became a turning point.

She learned that caregiving isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about presence, empathy, and truly listening. When her father was diagnosed, those lessons gave her the tools to walk beside him with strength and compassion.

She also learned that caregivers need support, too. “CanCare taught me that it’s okay to feel sadness, exhaustion, and fear—and that those emotions are valid,” Kim says. Her experience with CanCare has not only shaped her as a caregiver but also as a leader, helping her bring empathy and understanding into every corner of her life.

For Kim, CanCare is more than an organization—it’s a community of hope. Through every volunteer, survivor, and caregiver she’s met, she’s been reminded that no one should face cancer alone.

CanCare's 35th Anniversary Celebration

We’re filled with gratitude for our event co-chairs, Michele Leal Farah and Tony Bradfield, who helped make this day so meaningful.

A heartfelt thank you to our keynote speaker, Dr. Katy Rezvani of MD Anderson, who inspired us all with her groundbreaking advancements in cell therapy, developing more targeted ways for the body to fight cancer than ever before.

We were also proud to honor:

Join Team HOPE: A Monthly Gift to Ensure No One Faces Cancer Alone

For 35 years, CanCare has walked alongside cancer patients and their families during moments where hope may feel out of reach. Every month,  newly diagnosed patients desperately need the hope that only comes from someone who truly understands, a survivor by their side who can say "I've been where you are, and you're going to make it through this." When you join Team HOPE as a monthly donor, you're giving the gift of hope itself, ensuring we can match patients with trained survivor volunteers, provide ongoing emotional support, and make certain no one faces cancer alone. In honor of our 35th anniversary, supporters who commit to giving  at least $35 monthly will receive our exclusive Team HOPE t-shirt.

Right now, there are people in our community who just heard the words "you have cancer" for the first time. This is more than a t-shirt. This is the phone call when someone's mind is racing, the gentle hand on a shoulder in a radiation waiting room, the reassuring voice that says, "Tomorrow will be better than today." Don't wait. Join Team HOPE today at cancare.org/donate. Because when someone's has just heard those words, hope can't wait for next month."
