Volunteer Highlight

Meet Carol Greene, a compassionate and dedicated cancer survivor and CanCare Volunteer who was recently recognized as CanCare's
2023 Volunteer of the Year.

Originally hailing from Western Canada, Carol made the life-changing move to Texas in 1972. With a heart full of empathy and a desire to make a difference, she dedicated 29 years of her life as a registered nurse within the Memorial Hermann system.

It was during her tenure there in the mid-90s that Carol was introduced to CanCare, an organization close to her heart. Over the years, she became deeply involved, serving as a church representative for the past decade. Outside of her volunteer work, Carol finds joy in family gatherings, cooking, gardening, and embroidery and spending time with her grandchildren and now great grandbabies.

One of the highlights of Carol's week is her participation in the Prayer and Praise Team weekly gathering, where she finds solace and strength in the power of prayer alongside friends from all over the country. Representing CanCare at Health Fairs allows Carol to give back to the community and spread awareness of the organization's invaluable services.

As a mentor, Carol shares her experiences and offers support to new volunteers, helping to ease their anxieties and guide them on their journey with CanCare. At Houston Methodist West Hospital, Carol serves as a volunteer alongside four other dedicated CanCare volunteers, providing support to cancer patients in their time of need.

Despite facing personal losses, including the passing of her father and son to cancer, Carol reflects on the importance of cherishing each day and living her "new normal" to the fullest. Her resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to serving others make her a beacon of hope and inspiration within the CanCare community.

Thank you, Carol, for your incredible service to the CanCare community!
