Deshawn M.
Deshawn was diagnosed with Stage 3, Grade 3, Triple Negative Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in August 2022, just as she was preparing to celebrate her fifth year of recovery from a stroke. Her cancer was growing so aggressively that chemotherapy had to begin immediately, even before a medi-port could be placed. It was a long and grueling two years of treatment, but Deshawn is standing strong.
From the beginning, she leaned on her faith, her family, and especially her mother, an 82-year-old double cancer survivor, who stood by her through every difficult moment. Humor also became a lifeline, helping her stay connected to her oncology team and her own resilience. But what truly changed Deshawn’s journey was finding CanCare.
Through CanCare, Deshawn now volunteers at Houston Methodist West Hospital, visiting chemotherapy and radiation patients. Not only does she help others, but she also helps herself. By constantly sharing her story, Deshawn believes she takes the power away from the diagnosis and gives it back to herself.
In her words, “You have cancer, it doesn't have you.”
To anyone thinking about seeking support from CanCare or Volunteering... My time with CanCare has been the best decision. Take the step and try it out. You will come to the realization that it's helping you too.
Her Message of Hope ... Remember that you are going THROUGH cancer treatment, meaning there is an end in sight as long as you keep GOING to get to the other side.
