November is the month when leaves really begin to come down from trees and chilly breezes come out to play. It's truly the perfect time to put on some fuzzy socks, sip on a hot beverage, and cuddle up with loved ones. It’s also the perfect time to appreciate all the good things in our lives, and to do what we can to give a little back.
Giving Tuesday is a special day in November where we are all encouraged to make the world a better place by supporting the communities and organizations around us that are doing good things for the people who need it most! What is Giving Tuesday
In 2012, Giving Tuesday made its debut in the US. According to GivingTuesday.org, the official website, this day of giving was established by New York's 92nd Street Y in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation to inspire more people to do good deeds. In 2019, Giving Tuesday split off into its own organization.
Due to word-of-mouth and the use of the hashtag #GivingTuesday on social media platforms, this event has become extremely popular all around the world. In fact, Giving Tuesday in 2021 raised a record $2.7 billion in the United States and even more globally! As this international giving day has continued to evolve, it has expanded its scope to include giving more than just money, such as volunteering and spreading awareness for good causes.
When is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday 2022 will be on November 29. It is always held on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving each year. Since Thanksgiving is the fourth week of November, Giving Tuesday will always fall on the last Tuesday of November or the first Tuesday of December. Everyone! Giving Tuesday is certainly important for nonprofits like CanCare, but it is intended to help people and organizations of all kinds, including individuals, families, churches, schools, and small businesses. There is no formal process to participate in Giving Tuesday. You don’t have to register or fill out a form to be eligible. All you have to do is find a good cause and give what you can!
Giving Tuesday Activities
While Giving Tuesday is most well known as a day to make a financial donation to your favorite charity, there are many ways you can give. A few popular ideas include:
Volunteer your time - Sometimes we forget that volunteering is a valuable opportunity to give back. Find out how you can help out by getting in touch with a nearby hospital, shelter, or nonprofit beforehand.
Get the word out on social media - Shout out the good causes you want to support and use the hashtag #GivingTuesday! In 2017, this hashtag had 1 million social media mentions! You can help CanCare spread the word on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn!
